GLYNNETTE'S FAQ

Glynnette's FAQ: Text

Q: How did you feel marching with MLK?

A: I was extremely excited. MLK had only led marches in the South and this was his first and only, he would lead in the Northeast, although I didn't know that at the time. I was also happy, hopeful and confident that race relations would improve in this country.

Q: How did your grandchildren react when they found out you marched with MLK?

A: They were amazed! My oldest grandson said, "Wow! My grandmother actually marched with someone famous like Martin Luther King, Jr.! She must be really, really old!"

Q: What were your thoughts on the civil rights movement as an eleven year old, the age when you marched with MLK?

A: I was very concerned about the events taking place throughout the South, and my sister and I wanted to be "Freedom Riders", but we weren't old enough. Also, our mother would not have allowed us to participate in that way. I remember the morning when the four girls were killed in the Birmingham church bombing. We were getting ready for church ourselves, and I remember thinking, "That could have been me." That event had an impact on my life to do what I could in my circle to promote change.

Q: Do you think you will write any more books?

A: Perhaps!

Q: What was the purpose of making your first book? What did you hope to accomplish?

A: I wrote this book as a story that I would read to the students in my school around the MLK holiday and during Black History Month. I just wanted to share my experience with them. Someone suggested to me that I should make it into a book, and since the students seemed to enjoy it, I thought other kids might enjoy it too.

Q: You said earlier you loved popcorn. Would you like to elaborate?

A: I believe there is a gene for loving popcorn and I think I'm addicted. When I smell popcorn, I have to have it!

Q: Describe each of your four fabulous grandchildren in 3 words.

A: The oldest, (presently 19 years old): would be described as innovative, ambitious, and entertaining.

For the second oldest, (presently 18 years old), I can't think of one word for it, but many family members refer to him as Bill Nye the Black Science Guy! He is also athletic and a thespian.

My second youngest, my only granddaughter, a princess, (presently 6 years old), is outgoing, inquisitive and extremely smart.

Last but not least, my youngest (presently 5 years old), is a maestro genius, confident and inventive.

Q: What do you want your readers to takeaway from reading this first book?

A: We all have experiences in life; some of them have a huge impact on us. Find that experience, and let it drive you to do great things.
